This tutorial demonstrates how to draw various types of manga and anime eyebrows in different positions (lowered/raised).
Although eyebrows in anime and manga can have many shapes and sizes, they generally fall within a few categories.
Thin Anime Eyebrows
These are the eyebrows that anime characters have.
Example 1 – Basic Thin Eyebrows
Simple eyebrows. These should be slightly thicker in the middle, and thinner at the ends.
When lowered, you can draw these eyebrows in a wave-like shape. Depending on what emotion you wish to convey, you can draw these eyebrows upside-down or higher up on your head with raised inner ends.
Example 2 – Thin to Thick Eyebrows
These are not much different from the previous example. They tend to be thicker towards their inner ends and thinner towards their outer ends. Draw accordingly
You can draw these eyebrows in different states, but it is possible to do the same thing as the first. Keep in mind the overall shape of your eyebrows and draw the inner ends a little thicker for each one.
Example 3 – Single line thin eyebrows
These are the simplest eyebrow designs. These can be drawn using only one line.
These eyebrows can be drawn in different positions, as shown in the first example.
Short Anime Eyebrows
Many anime characters have very short eyebrows. Short eyebrows are generally the same distance from the middle of your face as long eyebrows. Their outer ends don’t reach as far as the sides as long eyebrows.
Example 4 – Thin Eyebrows
Thinner eyebrows are more prominent towards the inner ends than those that are shorter.
Different emotions can be used to draw them almost exactly the same way as in Example 1, but they will have less “wave” when they’re lowered.
Examples 5 – Short Bushy Eyebrows
These types of eyebrows can be drawn in a similar shape to a triangle, but with rounded corners.
These eyebrows can be drawn in a variety of positions. You can either keep the overall shape the same or slightly alter it to match your expression.
Lower eyebrows are best if they point inwardly towards the face.
You can flip the shape of your eyebrows upside-down by raising them as in the third drawing.
You can raise your eyebrows as in the fourth example by drawing them higher up on your head.
Example 6 – Thick and Pointy Short Eyebrows
Similar to the one before, but slightly different in shape.
When drawing them in a different location, you can basically follow the instructions in the previous example. You can generally maintain their shape or modify them very slightly, and rotate them as necessary.
Eyebrows of Anime that are thick or bushy
Another type of eyebrow used in manga and anime is the thick and/or busty one. These are more common in male characters, but they can also be found in female characters.
Example 7 – Thick Eyebrows
These eyebrows are essentially a thicker version of the one in the first tutorial. These should be drawn thicker towards the middle, and thinner towards the ends. You can also make them thicker towards their inner ends (example number two).
These eyebrows can be drawn in many different places, just as in the previous example.
Example 8 – Very thick/bushy eyebrows
These eyebrows are very rare. They are usually seen on male characters, though they can sometimes be used as a joke by female characters.
These types of eyebrows should be drawn with a “blocky” shape.
Based on the previous example, you can again draw the eyebrows in different positions.
Example 9 – Multiline Thick/Bushy Eyebrows
To give these bushy eyebrows their thickness, you can draw multiple lines. This technique allows you to draw thick eyebrows while still looking light.
These types of eyebrows can be drawn with one line tracing the shape and the other with some distance in between.
Draw the eyebrows in different positions as shown in Example 1.
