Drawing a Normal Male Side View Face

To create a normal facial expression, simply place all facial features in the following order:

As shown in the above example, you can divide a male anime-style face. The horizontal halfway point of your head is where the eye should be drawn. This will also mark the top of your ear. The bottom of your ear/nose should be placed halfway between the tops of your eyes and the bottom part of your chin.

Place the bottom lip between your bottom and bottom, then draw your mouth slightly higher.

To show how facial features change based on expressions, the template above will be used in each example.

Drawing a Male Side-View Face with a Lightly Open Mouth

To create a slightly open mouth, lower the jaw and leave a small amount of the top row of your teeth visible.

You can find a tutorial on how to draw teeth here:

The above illustration shows how lower you should draw your jaw relative to the closed position of the mouth.

Keep in mind, however, that your jaw doesn’t just drop like an elevator. It also pivots downwards. To take this into consideration, the angle that you draw should change.

To create a larger open mouth, you can draw your jaw lower than in the previous illustration.

You can also see, based on the default proportions, roughly how far down you want it to be drawn. Keep the pivoting in your mind, and tilt it even further down.

Drawing a Yelling Male Side View Face

You can also make a yelling sound by drawing the jaw in the same manner as the previous example but pulling the lips back to expose more of your teeth.

You can again see that the jaw position is the same in this example.

Drawing a frowning male side view face

To create a frowning look, lower the eyebrows (especially at the front). The bottom of your eyelid should be inverted so that the eye is slightly closer to the surface.

The mouth should be drawn upside-down, with the bottom lips slightly elevated.

In the above example, you can see how facial features shift when they frown in comparison to their normal state.

Drawing a Surprised Male Side View Face

To create a surprising face, raise your eyebrows (especially at the front) and open your eyes wider than usual.

Draw the jaw lower (same as in the open mouth example), but draw the mouth with an easier curve that doesn’t go as deep into the head. This is because the mouth will form an “O” shape when the sides of your lips are pulled towards the nose.

The above illustration shows how the facial features change in an unexpected expression.

Drawing a Content Male Side View Face

Anime male face side view content expression drawing

To express content, raise your eyebrows with one eye closed. Make your mouth a little wider and curve it a bit like a light smile.

It is important to notice that the eye will appear slightly squinted when drawing this expression. This means you will position it higher than if it were closed in a relaxed state.

You can read more about drawing closed and squinted eyes.

It is easy to see the difference in facial features when content expressions are used in this example.

Drawing an angry male side view face

Draw the eyebrows lower than normal to make an angry face. The eye should be drawn in reverse from its normal position.

Draw your mouth in the same way as the example of an open mouth, but don’t draw the jaw lower. Instead, the lips should be pulled back to reveal the teeth. To emphasize aggression, you can add a hint of sharpness to the lips.

As you can see, the facial features shift in anger in the above illustration. The facial features tend to move more when the emotion is extreme.

Drawing a Scared Male Sideview Face

To create a fearful expression, raise your eyebrows (especially at the inner ends). With a smaller iris, open your eyes wide.

See:

The jaw should be drawn lower than in the “slightly opened mouth” example. However, the mouth should be slightly angled downwards.

In the above example, you can see how the expression shifts to a scared expression.

Drawing a smiling male side view face

Anime male face side view grinning expression drawing

To make a smiling face, lower the eyebrow and squint the eyes. The mouth should curve slightly upwards towards the tip, with a small wrinkle at the end. Draw a hint of a pointed tooth, just as you did earlier with your angry expression.

Drawing a Puzzled Male Sideview Face

To create a confused look, raise your eyebrows slightly and open your eyes slightly.

The mouth should be slightly opened, with the curve of the curve not extending as far as the head in the case of the usual lightly open mouth example. This is because the lip will form an “o” shape, where it will pull in towards the nose.

In the above example, you can see how the facial features change for this expression.

Draw your mouth slightly wider and curvier.

As you can see, there isn’t much change in the facial features required to express this expression.

Drawing a relaxed male side view face

Anime male face side view relaxed expression drawing

To create a relaxed look, keep the eyebrows in their natural state and close your eyes. The mouth should be slightly smaller and have almost no curve.

Important to remember that the closed/relaxed eye should be drawn to the same level as the lower eyelid when it was open.

This particular example shows that the primary change in the expression is the eye.

Drawing an embarrassing male side view face
